Witness Life's Genesis in a Beautiful Underwater World

The origins of life get reimagined in video artist Alexis Bamme's 'ABIOGENEIS - Dream of Alchemy.'

In tribute to Stéphane Leduc, the 20th century chemist who thought he had recreated the process of life's genesis, this short, dreamy video reimagines this creation, underwater. Alexis Bamme, a video artist and graphic designer, created ABIOGENEIS - Dream of Alchemy in order to link scientific achievements with art and celebrate dreams that have not yet been realized. The video depicts the growing of algae, a school of silverfish, and one odd pink fish which transforms into a lizard-like and then rodent-like creature. Its video simplicity and reverence for life are quietly lovely. The title refers to the original evolution of life.

"South American waters" set the video, inviting the viewer to imagine, What if the creation of life happened there? Bamme’s other videos depict more abstract shapes, often playing with fractals, like the flower-filled Acetate. They also typically feature more rhythm-oriented music, which gives them an entirely different mood. The calming electronic track behind ABIOGENEIS is by Florian Desnos, who has worked on all of Bamme’s videos, and it completes the video's dreamy vibe.
