MC Hammer and Beck Are Mutual Fans and Quite Possibly Best Friends

Hammer has signed some copies of Beck's upcoming album 'Colors' for you to buy, just because.

In some bizarre but ultimately heartwarming news, Newbury Comics is selling CD copies of Beck's new album Colors, due out this Friday (October 13), which come accompanied by a booklet signed by MC Hammer. They offer no explanation as to why on their website—I honestly wonder if one is even required—though in a statement, according to NME, Hammer said "Colors is a great party record." The two are also reportedly mutual fans.

So, you see, it makes perfect sense that MC Hammer would sign copies of this album. Similarly, as a fan, I will be signing exclusive copies of Carly Rae Jepsen's 2015 opus E•MO•TION in my local record store on Saturday, before being asked to leave by security.

Flippancy aside, however, what's particularly sweet about this is that MC Hammer likes Beck enough to want to sign copies of his album, and that Beck likes MC Hammer enough to let him. More artists should express their mutual fandom in this manner, in my opinion. Perhaps, for example, Kanye will reveal himself as a Bruce Springsteen fan—seeing as how the Boss recently told Variety that he thought The Life of Pablo was "an amazing creation, especially the arrangements"—and the two will embark on a co-headlining tour complete with matching Yeezy Supply blue denim costumes. Or maybe Cardi B will come out as a Grimes fan (Grimes recently called "Bodak Yellow" her favorite song of the moment) and they'll create the best song ever recorded together. Or you know, just run in 2020.

Basically what I am saying is: it's sweet when artists like each other and I want more collabs that don't feel like they were arranged by a label, with the musicians introduced to each other an hour before a video shoot. Maybe Beck and MC Hammer could start a trend. I mean, it's unlikely. But they could.
