Living in a small town with very limited nightlife and very little to do, my friends and I make the most of it by taking what our town has to offer young people: food and drink.

In summer, when there even more dining options, the street becomes our kitchen as well as our playground. Venturing from diners to bars to backyards to beaches, this series is a dedication to Derry youth as well as our love for food and drink.

Normally when I set out to create a body of work, I tend to shoot on film as opposed to shooting digital. From my own experience, shooting on film forces me to work in a much more contrived manner. Because I can't see the photograph on a screen seconds after it's shot, I am a forced to slow down while composing the scene.

But sometimes this way of working can be too controlling and ends up forcing the people I am photographing to lose sight of their own spontaneity and simply end up following instructions.

This is exactly what shooting on a phone camera has allowed me to avoid. It gave me the freedom to capture youth and young people through a much more loose, candid and documentary-style approach. I could capture the action exactly as it was playing out and was able to photograph my subjects behaving as their true selves. My aim was to create a series that celebrates youth, freedom, coming-of-age, and spontaneity—all while focusing on food.
