Will Oldham's career is one that twists and turns with possibility and innovation but which always nods to the past. His newest release – an album of Merle Haggard covers, intended to memorialise the late, great country musician, who died last year – is no different.
Now streaming via NPR, the album sees Oldham, under his trusty Bonnie 'Prince' Billy moniker, taking a whistle-stop tour through Haggard's back catalog with tenderness and care for the work of one of his most-cited influences. Backed by a considerably-sized band, Oldham reimagines a number of Haggard's most classic tracks, and the result is a rich album which breathes life back into its dearly departed inspiration.
