Blast Yourself into Outer Space with Glowing Palms' Glitchy "Asteroidz"

The Manchester-based synth-mangler's new single is even more appealing than a bowl of carbonara with Rio Ferdinand

When you think of Manchester you probably think about Rio Ferdinand's restaurant or blokes in big coats with beards or canals or Corrie or the Hacienda or miserable and unceasing rain. You'd probably find yourself thinking of a lot of things actually, before you got to palm trees. Do palm trees exist in Manchester? Rio Ferdinand's probably got a lot of palm trees actually. I bet he has palm trees in his restaurant as it goes. I bet you're given a palm tree to sit under while you dine. Maybe I'll find out one day. I hope so. I've been looking for reasons to keep on truckin' recently and that's one of them: a big bowl of carbonara under a palm tree in Rio Ferdinand's restaurant.

Sorry, I'm running away with myself here. The reason I'm going on about Manchester's paucity of palm trees is because we've got a premiere here by Manchester based synth-mangler Glowing Palms. Palms…Manchester…see, it all makes sense now, doesn't it? You can see clearly again and it feels great.

In fact, you probably feel so great that you'll want to tuck into Palms' latest release for Blip Discs, his first solo 12" since 2013. Where, I want to know, has the time gone? Where? Has it slipped down the sofa with my hopes and dreams? Probably…that'd be just my bloody luck, wouldn't it? The Kiki/Asteroidz single is a glitchy, bleepy, broken thing that sounds like battery acid and damp puddles. The guys at the label told me that it sounds like "Todd Terje and Princess Peach did the deed and birthed some Norwegian-Italian superhero plumber DJ android phenomena." If that's the case, and you know what, it sort of is actually, then it's no wonder that the likes of Bonobo, Auntie Flo, Bradley Zero, Contours, Kornél Kovács, and Moxie have been playing it out. If it's good enough for them, it'll be good enough for you too.

Oh, and there's even a VIDEO GAME to go alongside it—you can shoot asteroids! In space! As Glowing Palms! Rio, stick the carbonara in the microwave…I may be some time!
