Modern classical composer Max Richter's soundtracked many a comedown over the years. Albums like Memoryhouse and The Blue Notebooks
have gotten us through the afternoons we never thought'd turn into evenings. So thank you, Max, thank you for easing us into our takeaway pizzas and Attenborough marathons.
Richter's most recent release was the eight hour long lullaby SLEEP which was, yep, designed to aid with sleep. Weirdly, given it's primary task, it's a lot more interesting and engaging than whatever new age surf-and-birdcall flim-flam you might have used in the past to help you transition into slumber. The record was a classical smash and Max is overseeing the release of a super-deluxe eight disc box set, which should arrive in all good record shops—and mattress warehouses— on the 11th of December. He's also a series of super somnambulant SLEEP remixes, the first of which we're proud to be bringing you today.
Scottish post-rock gods Mogwai, for all their forays into skyscraper huge rock gigantism, are no strangers to quietude and restraint: just check their soundtrack to everyone's favourite arthouse football film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait for a look at the lads' more gentle side. Richter's asked them to give SLEEP segment "Path 5" a going over. The result is a kind of terrifying Italo record slowed down to a brutally grinding crawl. In a good way. We're not exactly sure if you're able to sleep along to it, but hell, why not give it a go?
