Rez: I’m Joan Llabata, also know as Rez. I work in many different fields like filmmaking, interactive art and music production. I also co-direct the CORE Labs art production center where we develop ways to explore art expression from a technological point of view. That doesn’t only apply to the praxis, but also to the philosophical implications and relations of technology in the path of human evolution.What hardware do you use?
Hardware is just a tool. And a tool is something you have to use depending on the project you are working on. That said, I use the hardware required for each kind project. For example: for interactive projects we use Arduino as a key piece in our developments, but this is only a small piece in a very big system of hardware and software pieces. They key is not “what hardware do you use” but “what kind of hardware do you use.” We truly believe the best hardware you can use is an open source hardware that lets you use and modify it with total freedom. We use open hardware and software (as much as we can).What software do you use?
The answer is much the same as before. We focus on open source software. The most important softwares in our developments are OpenFrameworks, Processing, Arduino IDE. We also use commercial software like Flex Builder + AS3 scripting language..If money were no object, how would you change your current setup?
Oh… don’t make me think on that. If money were no problem, I wouldn’t think about what to buy but what to do. Projects. Big Projects. :)What fantasy piece of technology would you like to see invented?
“Aleph System” — one machine that includes: Time machine + multidimensional wrap engines + reader of universal knowledge. Something that lets you travel anywhere, anytime, and transfers to you the whole universal knowledge. You know, just a basic tool.Is there any piece of technology that inspired you to take the path you did?
So many. The list would be endless.What’s your favorite piece of technology from your childhood?
My great-grandfather worked in his fields and I perfectly remember the rusted carriage he used to plow the fields and the huge tools made of wood and iron he used. I was always amazed with all this stuff and I studied carefully how they worked, how they where made. Hidden from the view of my grandpa, my grandma let me use them and that was like a big experience for me. That was a very basic technology, but for a five-year-old kid from the city, the experience was just amazing.
