Far from minimalistic, with its wide array of colorful visual cacophonies and kaleidoscopic multimedia art, the Tokyo-based audiovisual label BRDG goes big. In their latest audiovisual work, ATOM, BRDG parallels the birth of a human being with the spark of an atomic explosion—maybe the one at the very heart of our universe.The work begins in black and white. A human baby in the fetal position—perhaps a nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey—floats in a black void punctured with bursts of amorphous white light. It also calls to mind the interstellar bubble traveler in Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain.

The electronic music is equally as formless and impressionistic. There is a certain comic book-like quality to the animation, particularly when the baby suddenly holds an atomic matter in its hands, which bursts into a dazzling procession of luminous colors.From there on out, everything gets very mutated, from the video to the audio. Lines oscillate and coalesce into figures, which then morph into human and non-human forms, all of it soundtracked to an evolving electronic soundscape. What else could one call it but psychedelic science fiction? Check out ATOM below:
