Our Favorite Fan-Made Disney/Star Wars Mash-Ups Reacting To Disney's Takeover Of Lucasfilm

Star Wars fans express their hope and distress through the timeless language of fan art.

Yesterday, the world heard the news that an iconic powerhouse from its collective childhood is being absorbed by a beloved franchise from its geekier collective teen years. That’s right, Disney is acquiring Lucasfilm along with the Star Wars franchise, and there’s a brand new Disney-produced Star Wars trilogy coming our way beginning in 2015. Today, there’s a tone of buzz regarding news that this new trilogy won’t be based on the Thrawn book trilogy, which die-hard fans were naturally expecting to be the basis for the saga’s cinematic continuation.

In short, the Star Wars fan world has mixed feelings. Everyone is excited that there will be a set of films, and after widespread disappointment with the most recent trilogy of sequels under George Lucas, it may be a relief that another creative team is taking over. But that team is from Disney! And although Disney is a massively trusted name in children’s entertainment, no one wants to see Star Wars turn into Tron: Legacy.

And if there’s one thing Star Wars fans are good at, it’s expressing their emotions through fan art. In the last 24 hours, the geek-sphere has exploded with images that bring the imagery of Disney and Star Wars together. Some are themes that recur and others are rather original, but all of them are from the heart.

Here are our favorites.

Disney Princess Leia

Naturally, the first place a lot of minds went upon hearing about the acquisition was equating Leia to a Disney princess. This stable of lady characters has gone from the demure damsels of the Snow White era to the arguable more bad-ass Pocahontas… But I think we can all agree that Leia would kick all their asses.

Mickey Death Star

And after the average Star Wars fan mind can manage to wrench itself away from the allure of Leia, this is the next place this takeover takes it. Would you equate Disney more with the Imperial forces or with the Rebel Alliance?

Movie Mash-ups

Then there are countless other references to be made by crossing over random imagery from animated Disney flicks and Stars Wars memes. Clever as hell or kind of a stretch? You decide.

Previous Fan Art

Weirdly, a lot of creative fans came up with Disney/Star Wars mash-ups well before this whole thing happened. Imagine them hearing about the news and digging frantically through their attics to unearth past fan art that is suddenly so relevant.

Political Cartoons

You know how you can always sense a little bit of an agenda behind a political cartoon? Well the kind of passion you find behind political opinions is nothing compared to the passion for Star Wars. There are a few of these out there, but this one sums them all up best.

A New Hope

Along with the below image, this redditor put forth a message of hope which Disney will hopefully heed when taking this beloved franchise into its hands.

“Disney, you may have purchased Star Wars, but in a profound way, the mythos belongs to all of us. We’re putting our trust in you, so please, make us proud.” -mehatch

And just for kicks

Here’s an awesome picture of Jar Jar Binks getting his jaw broken by a Storm Trooper. Now there’s something we can all agree on!
