RAF jets carried out their second round of airstrikes on Islamic State in Syria, with four jets bombing the Omar oilfields in eastern Syria on Friday night.

Speaking on a trip to an RAF base in Cyprus, the defence secretary Michael Fallon refused to offer a timetable for the bombing raids, saying the operation was "not going to be short or simple".

The RAF flew six Typhoons and two Tornados to its base on Cyprus last week, doubling the number of British attack jets available in the region for operations against Islamic State.

The Iraqi government summoned Turkey's ambassador on Saturday, demanding Turkey immediately withdraw troops it sent across the border without the Iraqi government's consent.

Turkey sent around 25 tanks and 150 soldiers over its border with Iraq to the Bashiqa area, about 20 miles north east of the ISIS stronghold of Mosul.

Turkey says the troops have been deployed to help train Peshmerga fighters, who are fighting against ISIS in the region.

The Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi said the deployment was a "serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty".

Around 60,000 properties were left without power in Lancashire and the army has was deployed to evacuate people in flood-hit areas in Cumbria and the Scottish borders.

Figures show that 34cm of rain fell in the Lake District in 24 hours, which will be a new record if the figures are verified.

Mass Shootings
IS CLAIMED THE PAIR WHO KILLED 14 IN US SHOOTING WERE FOLLOWERS

Islamic State said this weekend that the married couple who carried out the mass shooting in California on Wednesday were its followers, but did not claim responsibility for the attack.

The Islamist group made the claim in an online clip released on Saturday, three days after Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik opened fire at a party in San Bernadino, 60 miles east of Los Angeles, killing 14.

According to FBI Director James Comey, Malik posted a message on Facebook pledging allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. He also said the couple had exhibited signs of developing radical ideas and potentially been inspired by "foreign terrorist organisations".

If the attack proves to have been an act of terrorism, it will be the deadliest such attack the Unites States has seen since September the 11th, 2001.
