[Exclusive] Building Art Boats for a Music Festival on a Lake

With its 2,900 acre reservoir setting, and swimming in between stages, Symbiosis Gathering isn't your average festival, and that's kind of the point.

Coachella too dry? Burning Man too dusty? We hear you; it's a pretty-much universally accepted fact that things are better where its wetter, so why not try a festival on a lake?

For the last 10 years—following a 2014 hiatus—Symbiosis Gathering has been brought droves of festivalgoers to an oasis in Oakdale, California, the 2,900 acre Woodward Reservoir. This year, for its 10-year Re:Union edition, the festival has initiated a first-of-it’s-kind Art Boat program, which will see builders from all over the world constructing state-of-the-art party ships platooning between the five stages strategically situated on each part of the naturally occurring 5-pointed peninsula that delineates the reservoir.

Today, The Creators Project premieres an exclusive behind-the-scenes video detailing the construction of Artemiid, a winged, "interactive kinetic sculpture art boat" with 3500 individually programmable LEDs lining its wings, dual blue flame blasters, a fire poofer on the back, a DJ booth, a 2000w sound system, a mosaic floor made of DVD pieces. Check it out below:

Beyond next-level art boats, and stages you can literally swim between, this year's Symbiosis Gathering features the talents of no less than Nicolas Jaar, Cocorosie, Tipper, Four Tet, Shpongle, food, dancefloors, and tons of on-site art.
