Sigrid’s “Plot Twist” Video Celebrates Getting Over a Deadbeat

Just throw your head back and scream "shots fired"—everything's OK now.

There's a point during Sigrid's turn on Later … With Jools Holland in early May when everything clicks. The Norwegian singer's performance of her semi-ubiquitous single "Don't Kill My Vibe" starts off with the slight vocal wobble you'd expect from someone not only singing right near the top of her range, but doing so on a national UK TV stage. But when the barely three-minute stripped back rendition of her show-me-some-respect anthem kicks into its second chorus, the true grit of her vocal takes over. By the time the refrain repeats, she sounds more like Glen from down the pub who's been smoking four packs a day since '76 than a 20-year-old singer-songwriter on the cusp of blowing up.

So when the timbre of Sigrid's "shots fired!" yelled during the chorus of her latest single, "Plot Twist", gave me the same sort of chill and I thought, yes, we certainly would be happy to premiere this video right here on esteemed site noisey dot com. The video, directed by Sigurd Fossen and William Glandberger of Fillin Productions, sets her kiss-off banger to scenes of general happiness and hair-swinging abandon. It's like a visual representation of the feeling you get when you shake off a deadbeat and realise that, actually, they've been holding you back rather than enriching your life.

When I mention how personal the video feels, with its VHS aesthetic, Sigrid sounds excited. "Ah, thanks – that's what we wanted people to feel whilst watching: an insight into my everyday life," she told Noisey.

The scenes shot in red – which I mistook for ones in a little club – kept that personal touch going. "It's not from a club, it's from our old flat! I lived there for two years with my brother, his girlfriend and a couple of friends of ours – and it was great. I absolutely loved it, and I still miss it. We used to throw these huge parties, with 200 people attending. I remember me, my brother and his girlfriend sitting in our kitchen the week we were moving out (this is the same week I filmed the Apple Music Up Next campaign AND the Plot Twist video – I know, great timing). We wanted to throw a last goodbye party, so we thought, Why not just film it and have it in the music video?" Luckily, director Sigurd was into the idea, and Sigrid "invited all our friends to the party, and it turned out to be a really nice way to end the shoot."

And there you have it. Watch the video in full above, and practice throwing your head back while shouting "SHOTS FIRED" as one of your mates pies off their ex and clears that mess out of their life.
