The UN said around 4,000 refugees arrived in Slovenia on Saturday and Sunday.

Slovenia said it would keep its border open to refugees as long as Austria and Germany similarly kept their borders open.

The Slovenian army was brought in to assist the country's police in transporting migrants to its Austrian border, but Slovenia said it had the capacity to process over 5,000 refugees a day.

This weekend a candidate in the Cologne mayoral elections, Henriette Reker, was stabbed in the neck by a man who "had a racist motivation for committing the act", police said.

Ms Reker, a political ally of Angela Merkel, was attacked on Saturday morning by a 44-year-old man in what police say was a politically-motivated attack linked to Reker's pro-refugee stance.

Reker, thought to be the front-runner in Cologne's mayoral election, is said to be in a stable condition in hospital but with serious neck wounds.

Later in the day, two Palestinians, a man and a woman, were shot dead in Hebron, where Jewish settlers live in the heart of the city surrounded by a much larger Palestinian population; the Palestinian man was shot dead by an Israeli settler; the Palestinian woman by a police officer.

The last incident took place in Qalandiya, a village between Jerusalem and Ramallah, when a Palestinian man was shot dead after trying to knife Israeli police, authorities said.

Daniel Rye, a 26-year-old Danish photographer who was held by ISIS for a year, this weekend described the bizarre experience of being made to dance the tango with Jihadi John.

"He picked me up and I had to dance the tango, John and I. He led me around the prison," Rye told CNN.

But, he added, "Suddenly, he changed and just pushed me down. They kicked and hit me. They finished by threatening to cut my nose off with pliers and things like that."

Rye was released by ISIS in June of 2014.
