Kanye West's 'The Life of Pablo' Hits Number One on Billboard Charts Based on Massive Stream Numbers

'TLOP's number one position is a milestone for music streaming.

Kanye West's unorthodox release of The Life Of Pablo certainly confused people for a time, however it's digital only strategy has proven to not be a hindrance in its success. Today, TLOP soared to the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart, after receiving a full release on all streaming platforms this past March 31. According to Billboard, the number one position was achieved with streams accounting for 70 percent of the record's unit sales numbers, which "equates to just over 99 million U.S. streams for the album’s tracks in the week ending April 7."The album is still only available to purchase on a limited basis through Kanye West's own website, previously available to purchase through Tidal and with a ticket to the Madison Square Garden listening party.

It's a huge milestone for streaming services, and while prior records have hit number one without a physical presence, The Life of Pablo is the first where the majority of units was due to streaming. It's something that is bound to impact how future major music releases will be brought to the public.
