'The Sun' Reports the Death of Prince Philip, But He Is Not Dead

Okay!

This morning, The Sun published an article to their website stating that the Duke of Edinburgh had died. He has not died. He is not dead. But you'd be forgiven for thinking he was, given the fact the Sun's headline was, "Prince Philip dead at 95, how did the Duke of Edinburgh die, etc etc".

The story began: "Prince Philip, otherwise known as the Duke of Edinburgh, was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. He was married to Queen Elizabeth II. The pair had four children together – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward." All of this true, bar the death bit. Prince Philip is not dead.

The story was swiftly deleted, but still appears in Google search results.

The reason for the article being published presumably has something to do with the announcement that the Queen has called her staff from across the UK to a "highly unusual" meeting at Buckingham Palace today, sparking speculation that there would be an announcement about the ill health of either Philip or the Queen herself. However, since rumours started swirling, sources close to the Palace told the BBC that all is well with the 91-year-old monarch and her 95-year-old husband.

The consensus among social media speculators is that the meeting has something to do with the Queen moving house, which makes sense considering the announcement last year that Buckingham Palace is set to undergo major renovations this year. However, none of this has been confirmed or commented on by the Palace.

UPDATE 10:09AM, 04/05/17: The Palace has announced that Prince Philip will retire from royal duties this autumn.
