McDonald's Szechuan Sauce Is Coming Back, Thanks to 'Rick and Morty'

For one day only, you can now get your hands on the sugary goo that helped promote 'Mulan' in 1998.

Rick and Morty may not be returning for "a really long time," according Sunday's season finale, but the long-lost McDonald's dipping sauce the show made famous is heading back to restaurants this month. According to a press release, the fast-food chain is bringing back its Szechuan dipping sauce—that's become a meme and earned its own trap remix—for one day only.

After an appearance in the latest season's premiere, "The Rickshank Rickdemption," more than 40,000 people signed a Change.org petition demanding the fast-food giant bring back the Szechuan dipping sauce that promoted Disney's Mulan in 1998. Fans apparently wanted to taste the decades-old sauce Rick remembers in the episode after he laments that "it was delicious, and then they got rid of it, and now it's gone."

"This is the only place we're going to be able to try it, is in my memory," Rick says.

It seemed as if hungry fans were doomed to suffer that same fate, until McDonald's chef Mike Haracz tweeted, "I'll see what I can do," about resurrecting the sauce. The chain later sent Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland a jug of the stuff in July, which he determined was, "FUCKING DELICIOUS!!! NOT KIDDING." Roiland later auctioned off small jars of the sauce to benefit victims of Hurricane Harvey, and one somehow ended up in Deadmau5's hands after the DJ paid more than $4,500 for the stuff, Polygon reports.

Apparently, the sauce's grip on the cultural conversation was strong enough for McDonald's to capitalize on, at least for one day. In the press release, the fast-food giant said the Szechuan sauce would return in "very limited supply" on October 7. It's also doling out 1,000 vaguely alien-themed posters, "worthy of the pop-culture status fans have given their favorite sauces," to prove you're among the first to nab the sugary goo. Not every McDonald's will get the sauce, but you might be able to find one close to you slinging the stuff here.

At the end of "The Rickshank Rickdemption," Rick tells Morty that this sauce was his "one-armed man"—the force that would drive his series arc even if it took nine seasons. Hopefully, he lives in a dimension where this promotion exists so he can get back to turning himself into a pickle and going on adventures with his grandson, but never with Jerry.
