Video Game As Social Experiment: Peter Molyneux's Curiosity

Collaborate with thousands of people to whittle away a giant cube and discover a “life-changing secret”.

Peter Molyneux is a game designer known for his innovative video games—like Black and White and Populous—and he’s also known for having inspired a pretty hilarious fake twitter account, that curiously has more followers than his actual twitter account.

But the real Peter Molyneux has just released a new experimental game on iPhone, iPad, and Android called Curiosity – What's Inside the Cube. The game is a massively-multiplayer online game (MMO) and involves a large black cube that players have to destroy. Zooming in on this large cube players find it consists of lots of smaller cubes which must be annihilated to win the game.

Once a player taps on one of the small cubes they vanish and the goal is to tap away at them until they all disappear and the cube is no more. But the cube is huge and as each layer disappears another, different colored one appears underneath. This is where the collaboration comes in, as thousands of players slowly whittle the cube away until it disappears and the secret at its centre is revealed. “Join thousands of people worldwide,” the Apple store blurb states “to simultaneously chip away at a giant cube to discover the life-changing secret buried inside.”

Whoever the first person is who happens to tap away the last cube will be given this “life-changingly amazing” gift. What it will turn out to be remains a mystery but it’s certainly an intriguing, if a little bizarre and laborious-sounding, premise—and one that is being billed as a social experiment, rather than a traditional video game.
