David Ginola has suffered a heart attack and is unconscious but stable in a Monaco hospital, according to reports from the French publication Nice Matin.

49-year-old Ginola is reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest at 16.30 local time on Thursday afternoon, though the exact nature of his illness is yet to be confirmed. He was subsequently transferred by helicopter for treatment at Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace.

Ginola is believed to have fallen ill on a football pitch owned by Jean-Stéphane Camerini, who organises the Mapauto Golf Cup. Ginola was in attendance at a golf competition for sportspeople this afternoon.

The Frenchman became a hugely popular figure during his time in English football. First joining Newcastle United in 1995, he spent two seasons on Tyneside before switching to Tottenham Hotspur. Ginola played more than 100 games for the North London club and won the League Cup in 1999, before shorter spells at Aston Villa and Everton. He was also capped 17 times by his country and ran an unsuccessful attempt at the FIFA presidency last year.
