In the past, we’ve seen Japanese artists Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi insert themselves directly into their art, using their faces as MIDI controllers and mapping their bodies via Kinect to become sculpture templates. In their newest work, the pair take a step back and create something external.For an exhibition at Stereolux in Nantes, France, Manabe and Ishibashi conceived of a large framework of small rails on which illuminated ping pong balls travel. Something like a miniature roller coaster, the structure, designed in collaboration with Rhizomatiks, is fitted with sensors that alter the balls’ illumination based on their speed and position.Their intention was to try to utilize the 3D space without using holograms or 3D. The duo say it came from a “desire to occupy the field of vision differently”—and the outcome looks spectacular, like ethereal pixels floating and whizzing through the air.“Particles” is currently being exhibited in the Stereolux à La Fabrique in Nantes, France until August 19.[via CreateDigitalMotion]@PehPerGhost
