Dancer Lil Buck finds his feather-light footing inside the gilded halls of the Frank Gehry-designed Fondation of Louis Vuitton in Paris. Swimming across the glossy floors of the art space, the dancer is a lose human tendon in white sneakers, passing over the floor as if tracing out cursive letters. The performance is commissioned by the Fondation Louis Vuitton and NOWNESS in honor of the Icons of Modern Art: The Shchukin Collection.
The musical video is directed by Andrew Margetson, with music composed by Euvgueni Galperine and Sacha Galperine. The jooking discipline’s natural undulating style is a perfect counterpart to the tinkling piano score. Add to that the luminous quality of the gallery space, and the entire viewing performance is something close to euphoric. In some moments of watchful awe, Lil Buck’s swiveling limbs and expanding lines seem as if they are operating in slow-motion. The dancer says in a voiceover, “As performance artists and dancers we think of everything as art."
In an official statement about the project, Margetson says, “What I love about this project is that it gives us a new way of seeing Buck. Rather than being outsiders looking in, we’re now positioned alongside him, going on a journey into the heart of the iconic building with him.”
Lil Buck muses on the experience, “I loved working at the Fondation. The building is beautiful inside and out.” Following his delicate body movement through the exhibition galleries, the film builds to a climactic encounter with Picasso’s masterpiece Trois Femmes.
