Wimbledon Champ Petra Kvitova Attacked At Home By Knife-Wielding Man

The tennis star reportedly injured her left hand fending off what appears to be a burglary attempt.

Two-time Wimbledon champion and world No. 11 Petra Kvitova was attacked last night by a knife-wielding man. The incident occurred in Kvitova's home in Prostejov, a town of about 44,000 in the east of the Czech Republic. The left-handed 26-year-old injured her left hand fending off her attacker. The extent of the injury is unknown, although she said in a statement that it is "severe and I will need to see specialists."

The BBC appears to have contacted Kvitova's spokesperson, who called the attack a burglary. Stalkers are a major concern among female professional tennis players, and in 1993 then-No. 1 Monica Seles was stabbed on the court at a tournament in Germany by Gunter Parche, an unemployed 38-year-old who later admitted an obsession with Steffi Graf, Seles' chief rival.
