BRUSSELS WAS UNDER A SECURITY LOCKDOWN FEARING AN ATTACK

Brussels was under a security lockdown this weekend, with soldiers patrolling the streets and residents advised to avoid crowds, while a manhunt for the remaining two terrorists involved in last weekend's Paris attack continues.

On Friday the Belgian security services warned the government that a major attack was being planned on the city; in response, soldiers were deployed onto the capital's streets and the metro was suspended .

The mayor of the city said on Sunday that, "There are two terrorists in the Brussels region that could commit very dangerous acts."

There's been no indication of whether the security measures will be relaxed in the coming week.

Crimea declared a state of emergency on Sunday after power lines from Ukraine were blown up by unidentified attackers, cutting off the region's electricity supply.

Two of the main power lines that run into Crimea from Ukraine were attacked early on Friday morning; explosions destroyed the remaining lines early on Sunday.

Russia's emergency situations ministry said that some cities in the peninsula had been reconnected to power using generators, which it had helped put in place.

The Crimean first deputy premier, Mikhail Sheremet, said the separatist region could only provide half of its total power needs by generators and renewable energy.

Russia is building two power stations in Crimea, but these are only in the early planning stages.

The UK could begin bombing Islamic State in Syria within weeks, the chancellor George Osborne suggested this weekend.

David Cameron is likely to make a statement to parliament some time this week outlining a plan to attack IS, and a vote will happen one week later, several media outlets reported.

Speaking on Sunday, George Osborne said "Britain is not a country that stands on the sidelines and let others protect it", adding, "The UN vote has shown there is an international determination to deal with this pure evil. We will call the vote when we are confident to win it."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and those around him are strongly opposed to a UK intervention, but shadow chancellor John McDonnell suggested that Labour MPs – many of whom are divided on the issue – may have a free-vote on any potential military action.

Nearly 100 people were killed at a jade mine in Myanmar this weekend when part of the mine collapsed.

The victims, many of whom are scavengers living near the mine searching for discarded pieces of jade, were buried alive when a huge heap of earth from the mine collapsed, burying them alive.

Local people have complained in the past of poor working conditions at the mine and frequent land confiscations by the mining company.
