Multi-colored raindrop ripples morph into dynamic cellular structures, visualizing different biological processes in a hypnotizing new music video for Max Cooper’sOrder From Chaos. The video was constructed by motion graphics artist Maxime Causeret under the basis that it “map the emergent rhythm to an exploration of emergence in living form,” as written in the description. Using Cooper’s raindrop sample as a jumping-off point, Causeret animates visual demonstrations of cooperation and competition between invidiual biological cells.

The video opens with the sound of rain as it materializes into fluorescent circles on a black backdrop. The ripples become more and more abundant as the rain continues to fall and begin to squeeze together, forming cellular bodies. This development shows a natural cooperation between cells for the purpose of creating stronger bundles of life. This reaction eventually develops into what is described as a visualization of the endosymbiosis theory, a sort of quid pro quo between organisms that sees smaller cells get absorbed by larger ones. What were once separate entities eventually become dependent on one another as they evolve into a single organism.
We start to see indications of competitive behavior between the organisms as they begin to challenge each other for resources. This contest sparks evolutionary development and innovation amongst the cells. Causeret animates the idea of flocking behavior, “where groups of individuals form beautiful dancing-like patterns,” writes Cooper.
The video also showcases animations of what is described as “reaction-diffusion patterns, where simple chemical feedback mechanisms can yield complex flowing bands of color.” Cooper says these forms were originally introduced by computer scientist and mathematician Alan Turing. These reaction patterns were the building blocks of systems biology, an area of study that tries to simulate biological occurrences through computers so that we might better understand the operations of the natural world.
