  • An American Child Is Killed Every Other Day by Guns
    New analysis shows 554 children under the age of 12 have died from gun violence since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012. That works out at a rate of almost one death of a child by firearm every two days. —NBC News

    President Obama will visit the Pentagon today to discuss progress in the fight against the Islamic State. The latest data shows US-led air raids in Iraq and Syria have shifted from fixed sites to moving targets in an effort to disrupt its illicit oil trade. —USA Today

  • Police Shoot at a Crawling Suspect
    A video appears to show police officers in Lynwood, California shot and killed 28-year-old Nicholas Robertson as he tried to crawl away from them. The police department claims that witnesses "saw the suspect turn and point the gun at the deputies". —Los Angeles Times

  • Mosques Defaced With Jesus Graffiti
    The FBI and police are investigating possible hate crimes in Hawthorne, where two mosques were defaced with the word "Jesus", and a plastic grenade was left inside one mosque. It comes two days after a mosque was set on fire in Coachella. —CNN

  • French Teacher Stabbed
    A teacher has been attacked in a preschool class in a suburb of Paris by a man citing the Islamic State. The attacker shouted: "It's Daesh [Islamic State] - it's a warning", as he stabbed the teacher before fleeing. A manhunt is under way. —BBC News

  • Saudi Women Win Political Office
    Women have won political office in Saudi Arabia for the first time, following the country's first elections open to female voters and candidates. At least 18 women have won municipal council seats, and more than 900 woman ran for office. —Al Jazeera

  • Egypt: No Evidence for Terrorism in Jet Crash
    Egyptian investigators say a preliminary probe has found no proof that terrorism caused a Russian jet to crash in the Sinai. Russia has said a bomb brought down the plane after finding "traces of foreign explosives" in the debris. —Reuters

  • National Front Defeated
    France's far right National Front (FN) has failed to win a single region, despite leading in the first round of voting. FN leader Marine Le Pen blamed tactical voting, saying her party had been faced with "intimidation, infantilization and manipulation." —VICE News
