East German Melodic Techno Star Marek Hemmann is Coming to America

We got some words and an exclusive playlist from the bespectacled maestro.

After a decade affecting the musical landscape of his native Germany through releases on local labels Get Physical, Stil Vor Talent and Freude Am Tanzem, Marek Hemmann is coming to America. Rarely does an artist spend so long incubating an aesthetic for so long before foreign ears take note. His 2013 album Bittersweet is a deep treatise on the emotive capacity of techno, and to commemorate its recent re-release on Ultra, Hemmann is embarking on a five-date jaunt beginning at Brooklyn's Output on January 22 and ending at The Roxy in West Hollywood on January 31. This tour will be the first time his legions of American supporters will have an opportunity to see the man in the flesh.

The East German producer explains how the history of German techno has influenced his sound: "As we all know, the Wall came down in 1989, and the techno movement started more or less in the early 90s when Germany was reunited again. Electronic music was part of the re-unification process between East and West Germany. People who were divided for so long found a common [way] they could share their emotions and happiness. My sound is definitely defined by German techno. If this is what the US crowd is looking for, I can assure that they are going to have a good time."

Part of the unique joy of this tour will be watching Marek get to know the American audience on-the-fly. "I have never been to the States so I'm really looking forward to visit and explore this diverse country," Marek tells THUMP. "Of course, I'm also curious how the crowd likes my live set. Generally speaking I don't have high expectations before any of my gigs but I'm always positive and constantly go with the flow and try to keep the energy high on the dancefloor."

Even after so long to ponder his upcoming jaunt, Marek ain't stressin'. "I don't think too much," he says. "It's more about feeling and understanding the crowd that showed up to hear my music."

Marek put together a playlist of some of his favorite techno tunes. We took the liberty of sprinkling some of our own favorite Marek Hemman tracks into it. We hope he doesn't mind:
