It’s been a minute since anyone heard from Laureen Harper, wife of Canada’s former prime minister Stephen Harper, but last night on Twitter she returned to the public consciousness in a big way.

Harper called out Canadian TV personality Steve Ecklund, who hosts a hunting show called The Edge, for boasting about how he killed and stir-fried an Alberta mountain lion.

Specifically, Harper, who once hosted a cat video festival, tweeted, “What a creep. Chasing a cougar with dogs until they are exhausted then shooting a scared, cornered and tired animal. Must be compensating for something, small penis probably.”

In a series of photos posted to Facebook, Ecklund detailed how he hunted down the large animal and what he did with it afterwards.

“The entire animal is completely used, all meat processed, Hide will go into a beauty mount, skull will end up a decorative piece,” he captioned one image, describing the hunt as “an unreal ending to a fun filled season.”

Another image shows a stir-fry made from cougar meat with the caption “The end result…..a stir-fry feast.”

Cougar hunting is legal in Alberta, however many people, including Harper, responded to Ecklund’s posts with anger. “I come from a family that hunts and fishes. Learned to use every part of an animal. Killing for fun makes me sick,” she tweeted.

Ecklund wrote on Facebook that hunting the cougar is part of predator control, population management, and conservation. He also said he’d received “13 confirmed death threats” and “754 swear words” in response to his posts.

His TV show, The Edge, is described on its website as “the ultimate struggle to conquer nature, or be defeated by it.”
