Lindt Chocolate Is Now Suing the Weinstein Company

The empire that Harvey Weinstein once ruled over continues to crumble. The Weinstein Company now faces a lawsuit from chocolate manufacturer Lindt & Sprüngli.

The suit, filed on Wednesday in New York's Supreme Court by Husch Blackwell LLP on behalf of Lindt & Sprüngli, alleges that the Weinstein Company has cheated the chocolate makers of $133,333 in sponsorship fees. That sum of money was originally meant for an annual Golden Globes party that Lindt sponsored for the Weinstein Company.

Lindt began supplying the Weinstein Company with chocolates for the production company’s Golden Globes parties in 2016, paying the Weinstein Company a sponsorship fee of $400,000 in total that would be doled out to the company in three installments. The planned 2018 party was cancelled in late November, however, following the surge of sexual abuse accusations against Weinstein.

When Lindt contacted the Weinstein Company in early December asking for to be reimbursed, the lawsuit alleges, Weinstein Company personnel promised payment to Lindt by the end of December or early January. According to the suit, though, that money never materialized. Lindt contacted the Weinstein Company once again in early February demanding money, and though the Weinstein Company reportedly admitted to the breach throughout those communications, Lindt claims it still has not received the money.

The Weinstein Company, Lindt & Sprüngli, and Husch Blackwell did not respond to immediate request for comment from MUNCHIES on Thursday. In any case, the Weinstein Company is certainly in financial dire straits already: It's currently slouching toward bankruptcy.
