Kim Davis—the Kentucky county clerk who went to jail in 2015 for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples—is now waging her war against gay marriage in Romania, the New York Times reports.Same-sex marriage is not legal in Romania, but Davis is currently on a nine-day trip through the country, reportedly hoping to inspire Romanians to vote to amend their constitution and explicitly ban it.Right-wing group Liberty Counsel organized the trip, and a member of the Orlando-based organization, Harry Mihet, is accompanying Davis in Eastern Europe. The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled Liberty Counsel a hate group that advocates "for anti-LGBT discrimination under the guise of religious liberty."Davis and Mihet have reportedly already met with Romanian Orthodox leaders and are doing TV and radio interviews around the country to promote a constitutional amendment that would expressly define marriage as between a man and a woman."We invite Kim Davis to share with us her fight for freedom, her strong faith, and her experience in prison, which was the price she paid for standing up for her faith," Romanian anti-gay marriage group Coalition for Family's Mihai Gheorghiu said in a statement.Romanian LGBTQ activists have spoken out against Davis's visit. Vlad Viski of MozaiQ said Wednesday that "it is extremely worrying that a person who broke the law in the United States is being brought to Romania and presented as some sort of hero of Christianity… It is unacceptable for a person who disobeyed her own Constitution to tour Romania and give out advice about how Romania's Constitution should be changed."
