Bright Lights and Water Features: Freya Esders Shoots a Night Out

The photographer swaps her film for a phone.

This article is supported by the Samsung Galaxy S9. We challenged a bunch of our favourite young photographers to ditch their professional cameras for the night in place of a Galaxy S9. You don’t need a bunch of gear to get good low light shots—the results speak for themselves.

Freya Esders grew up on the Sunshine Coast, never forgetting to take a disposable camera on sleepovers and school camps. Now based in Melbourne and a bit older, that same nostalgic ‘90s aesthetic has seeped into her photography and filmmaking. Working with musicians, magazines, and fashion labels, Esders’ work has taken her to Iceland, Japan, and beyond. She’s still obsessed with photographing her friends, too––although the sleepovers have been swapped for nights out, and in this essay the disposables are replaced by candid phone snaps.
