Trump to meet with prison reform expert Kim Kardashian at the White House

Kim Kardashian West is heading east to the White House on Wednesday.

According to Vanity Fair, the media mogul is meeting with Jared Kushner, and later President Donald Trump, in an attempt to convince the administration to pardon Alice Johnson, a 62-year-old great-grandmother serving a life sentence without parole for a first-time drug offense.

Kardashian West has been fighting for Johnson over the past few months after finding Johnson’s story on Twitter in October, more than 21 years into her prison term.

“If you think about a decision that you’ve made in your life and you get life without the possibility of parole for your first-time nonviolent offense, there’s just something so wrong with that,” Kardashian West told Mic earlier this month.

After hearing her story, Kardashian West told Mic she brought her personal attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, who worked with her father during the O.J. Simpson trial, to help with Johnson’s case. Then, according to Vanity Fair, she reached out to Ivanka Trump, who put her in contact with her husband, Jared Kushner.

“I’ve been in communication with the White House and trying to bring her case to the president’s desk and figure out how we can get her out,” Kardashian West told Mic earlier this month. “That’s such a huge step from where we started with that not even being on their radar.”

During her meeting with Trump, the two reality-TV stars might chat about more than just Johnson’s case.

“For me, I’m just focused on criminal justice reform and helping one person at a time,” Kardashian West told Mic. “And so far the White House has been really receptive to my calls and I’m grateful for that.”

According to Vanity Fair, Kardashian West has joined Kushner in his fight for prison reform — Kushner has a personal tie to the issue, since his father, Charles, spent more than a year in federal prison for tax evasion, illegal campaign contributions, and witness tampering. But their push is at odds with many of the Trump administration’s own policies.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded an Obama-era memo that would allow leniency for non-violent drug offenders, increasing the kind of tough sentencing that first sent Johnson to life without parole. However, Trump might let this one slide. Last week, he pardoned legendary boxer Jack Johnson at the request of Sylvester Stallone, Lennox Lewis, and Deontay Wilder.

“So I am taking this very righteous step, I believe, to correct a wrong that occurred in our history,” the President said after pardoning Jack Johnson.

Today, Kardashian West hopes he’ll do the same for another Johnson.
