Meet Westbam, the Founder of Berlin's Love Parade

And get a lesson in early 90s style from the club kids werkin' and jerkin' in this vintage music video.

Every week, Time Travel conjures the ghosts of techno-futures past with selections from the dustiest corners of the WWW.

Westbam - "Rock the House"
Westbam is a German DJ icon, the founder of Berlin's most famous dance festivals: Mayday and the Love Parade. He's been one of Germany's best-known DJs since the mid-80s, and his debut 1989 release The Cabinet was the first DJ-concept album to be released in Germany.

This dude was so huge that in 1988 the Goethe Instituit sent him to the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea as a cultural attaché. His dream was to bring dance music out of the clubs and into the mainstream, and in less than a decade, the Love Parade alone went from drawing 500 to over 250,000 participants. Mayday has has been running continuously as an annual and biannual festival since 1991.

Now about the video, which was painfully hip and forward for the era! Word is that the animated backgrounds in this video were made for 3D, so if you happen to have some or those red and blue lens glasses around grab them now. The first vinyl pressing of this record included some in the sleeve, a visionary multimedia tie-in at the time. Even without them it's easy to be amused by the adorably retro club kids werkin' and jerkin' it across the screen, taking club culture out of the underground and into household TV sets.
