Auburn Barely Survives Against Lowly Jacksonville State

Auburn just barely beat Jacksonville State in overtime, despite their best efforts to lose.

Auburn tried its damnedest to lose at home to a team you've never heard of Jacksonville State, but they survived an embarrassing scare with a late touchdown in the final seconds of regulation. The Gamecocks took a 20-13 lead with just under six minutes left and Auburn immediately started off with a brain fart: they called a fair catch at the 15-yard line on the ensuing kickoff. Not ideal! Then after two big back-to-back runs of 18 and 21 yards from Peyton Barber, Auburn looked like they were back in control. Then they fumbled the ball and J-State was back in action.

Unfortunately, they went three and out on the resulting possession and then punter Hamish MacInnes fucked it all up with a 17 yard punt. So, with about two minutes left, Auburn took over on the Gamecocks 31. In five plays and a minute and twenty seconds, the Tigers were back in the end zone with a four-yard Barber run and we went to overtime. Auburn scored a touchdown on the first possession and, as these things so often go, the underdog team pissed it away. Eli Jenkins scrambled for an eternity and eventually took a huge sack on third-and-goal from the five-yard line that essentially ended the game. It forced a fourth-and-goal from the 21 that had no chance, despite a great effort on a catch out of bounds. So, Auburn is 2-0 and we'll forget all about the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in two weeks.
