Crate Expectations: Luca Bacchetti

Luca sets the mood with Shakira, Beastie Boys and tracks from his forthcoming EP, 'OVO.'

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Luca Bacchetti.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Luca: I think I was six and crazy for The Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star," which is a classic! But you know, children love happy songs and that guy with those glasses. It was just so ridiculous!

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
This isn't difficult, The Beastie Boys. My first experiment on the wheels of steel was with a couple of their tracks. In the beginning I used to scratch because when I was a teenager in NYC, I was at the center of my imaginary world, so it's fair to say I grew up on bread and Beastie Boys. Just to open the cover of Paul's Boutique made me dream of being there, on those streets.

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
I still love this song by Shakira, "Hips Don't Lie" featuring Wyclef Jean. I don't consider it a guilty pleasure, I would just called it a pleasure. Basically there are only two genres: good and bad music.

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
This FaltyDL remix of Disclosure and Friend Within called "The Mechanism." It's really special. I'd like to get more music like this.

Which track of your own do you love the most?
"No Gravity" from my forthcoming OVO EP means a lot to me, it has been produced between Italy and Barcelona. When I play this track it really sets the mood I'm looking for. The whole EP is a lot more intimate, modern and I really enjoyed working on the breakdowns.

What track of your own do you hate the most?
I don't hate, I just don't really feel my earlier productions anymore, even if they were important for my career. I get bored easily, so I'll go with "Rolling Brooklyn." I always try to challenge myself by just following those little voices in my head.

What track are you most excited to drop in your Toronto set at Switch?
It's a surprise! Of course tracks from my new OVO EP and other new stuff, like a remix I did for Audiofly recently. And my remix of "Lonely Stars in Open Skies" by Maher Daniel and John Charnis, it still gets played by myself and of other artists too, even thought it was released back in January.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
The last song depends on my mood, mostly techno classics. Playing in front of a special crowd helps. Sometimes if I feel an intimate connection, I can really play whatever I want and I love to close with something totally different. In recent years I remember playing Stevie Wonder, Maxwell, U2, Sade… I'm a DJ and a music lover.
