RIP David Peel, the Proud Hippie From New York City

The famed street musician who worked with John Lennon, Yoko Ono and GG Allin has died at age 73

David Peel, a famed New York City street musician who worked with John Lennon, Yoko Ono and GG Allin has died at age 73. Earlier this week Peel suffered a major heart attack and was in critical condition.

Born David Michael Rosario in New York City, Peel (named because of his liking for smoking banana peel) first recorded his acoustic "street rock" in the late 1960s as David Peel and The Lower East Side Band. His raw songs about marijuana and bad cops attracted hippies, punks and assorted weirdos. His debut album Have a Marijuana was released on Elektra in 1968. John Lennon came across him in 1971 when his ragtag band was playing in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. Lennon produced Peel's album The Pope Smokes Dope for Peel.

Peel appeared with Lennon at the John Sinclair Freedom Rally in Ann Arbor, Michigan on December 1971.
