Crate Expectations: Blond:ish

The day The Muppet Show song works in a DJ set will be a happy one.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Blond:ish.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Anastascia: "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane. It's still one of the best songs ever made…no explanation necessary. We just recently rewatched Alice in Wonderland on an airplane. It's amazing how many thing you understand while watching this movie as an adult, that you don't realize while you're a kid.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
VIV: "Fire" by Pointer Sister with "In the Bush" by Musique. Back when I was 6 or 7-years-old—not that I would call it mixing—but I would play on my Dad's reel-to-reel machine and try playing a record on the turntable by putting my mom's sewing needle to the record and spinning it manually.

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
VIV: "Same Shame Shame" by Shirley & Co. I get crazy on this track…busting out the moves. Watch out!

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
"Sonosono" by Aruna Sairam. We recently spent three weeks in India and we had this song on repeat. It was literally on at the beach, in the shower, doing yoga, waking up, eating, meditating, dancing or driving around in our rickshaw! It just makes us so happy!

Which track of your own do you love the most?
"Wizard of Love" featuring Shawni, we all wrote the lyrics together and recorded the song in our makeshift studio in Tulum. The lyrics have a lot of meaning and working with Shawni was an absolute joy. It all came together quite organically in a few hours. The song takes you on a journey.

What track are you most excited to drop at CODA?
VIV: Just wait until Friday…if you see me on top of a speaker, or doing jumping jacks, or doing knee-up jumps in the booth…that will be the track I'm most excited to be playing. And there might be a few!

What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set?
"Mahna Mahna" from The Muppet Show. It would be so great to do some sort of twisted rendition of this and play it when people are really out of their minds. I don't really think people would get it if we played the original. The question is…what is 'mahnamahna?' The answer is…who cares!

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
VIV: It really depends on what time those lights go on! But, to really bring a turn around from techno and the 'one vibe' together on the dancefloor, I would want to hear "Cathy's Diamonds" by Jozif.
