Lil Wayne, Dave and 67 Are All Playing Amsterdam's Appelsap Festival

Guess it’s time for a trip to the Netherlands in August.

You'd have to be actively avoiding music to have missed the current wave of UK rap sweeping through the country. Zoom into London in particular, and the likes of Loyle Carner, Little Simz and Novelist have already made names for themselves form sweaty stages to national newspaper features and reviews. Then, of course, there's the new lot coming up today, with XL's New Gen project championing tomorrow's greats across rap, R&B and grime.

Now, imagine lifting up part of that scene and dropping it in the middle of Amsterdam. That's the general gist behind festival Appelsap, which started off as a free block party in 2000 and has been running ever since, bringing together both Dutch and international talent. In a city more often associated with stoner stereotypes – and loud American tourist bros trying to out-macho each other and catch the attention of the women in lingerie, texting and looking bored in their red light district windows – one event's brought together the worlds of rap, soul, hip-hop and bass music.

Appelsap 2k17 is due to take over Amsterdam's Flevopark on Saturday 12 August, with south Londoners Dave, 67 and Siobhan Bell confirmed on the bill. Oh, and there's the small matter of a certain Lil Wayne announced as a headliner too, in what's pegged as his only Dutch festival appearance this year. Consider this the easiest excuse to go in search of some actual sunshine over the summer, and experience the space where UK, Dutch and American fans go to get weird. Day tickets are €47.50 at the moment, and can be mulled over here.

The festival's played host to DRAM, Kendrick, Skepta, Hudson Mohawke, Stormzy and more – they seem to know what they're doing. Or, in the words of Team Appelsap: "This party is dedicated to all the teachers that told us we'd never amount to nothing." There you go.

Here's the full line-up so far, with more names on the way:
