US Navy Fleet Belatedly Heads to Korean Peninsula
American vessels that both President Trump and the Navy suggested was en route to Korean Peninsula actually moved in the opposite direction over Easter, into the Indian Ocean. Officials since clarified that the strike group had to carry out training with the Australian military but is now "proceeding to the Western Pacific as ordered." Trump had told FOX News on April 11, "We are sending an armada."—The New York Times

Democrat Falls Short of Outright Victory in Georgia Election
Democrat Jon Ossoff failed to secure the 50 percent of voters needed to win a special congressional election in Georgia but did nab enough votes to send him to a run-off against Republican Karen Handel in June. Ossoff won around 48 percent of the vote after running on a "Make Trump Furious" ticket. If elected, he would take the greater Atlanta seat vacated by Tom Price when he joined the Trump administration.—VICE News

Police Say Shooting Spree 'Solely Based on Race'
Cops in Fresno, California, have arrested 39-year-old Kori Ali Muhammad and will charge him for fatally shooting three white males Tuesday, plus another murder from a week ago. Muhammad shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great") when arrested, but police chief Jerry Dyer said it was not a "terrorist related crime… This is solely based on race." —NBC News

Two Russian Bombers Intercepted Near Alaskan Coast
Military bombers from Russia were confronted by US jets in international airspace close to Alaska early this week, according to the Pentagon. The Russian TU-95 Bear aircrafts were discovered in an Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, around 100 miles off the coast of Kodiak Island. One official said a "safe and professional" intercept took place.—CNN

Civilian Evacuations Back Underway in Syria
Syrian civilians resumed evacuating the government-held villages of Foah and Kefraya Wednesday morning, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Refugees were forced to remain in the villages after a convoy of buses near Aleppo was attacked Saturday, killing at least 126 people.—BBC News

UN Staff Held Hostage at DRC Camp Released
A group of South Sudanese refugees at a camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo took 16 United Nations staff members hostage Tuesday before releasing them later that evening. The unarmed refugees had demanded to be moved to another country, according to the local UN bureau chief, but staff members were then "returned safely to their homes."—AP

One Dead After ISIS Attack Near Ancient Monastery in Egypt
ISIS claimed responsibility for an attack on a security checkpoint near St. Catherine's Monastery in Egypt, in which at least one police officer was killed. Four others were injured in the attack at the UNESCO World Heritage site at the base of Mount Sinai, one of the oldest Christian monasteries on Earth.—Al Jazeera

Asylum Claims Spike in Mexico Since Trump
The number of people applying for asylum status in Mexico has jumped by 150 percent since Donald Trump's victory in the US election. According to Mexico's refugee agency, 5,421 people applied between November 2016 and March, compared with 2,148 people during the same period the previous year. Cinthia Perez, a director at the refugee agency, said big political changes "impact everyone's consciousness."—Reuters
