17-Year-Old Ben Woodburn Becomes Youngest Player to Score for Liverpool

Ben Woodburn is 17 years and 43 days old. He just saw his first action in the Premier League this weekend against Sunderland and got another shot to play today during Liverpool's League Cup quarterfinal game against Leeds United. In the 81st minute he roofed his very first goal, becoming the youngest player to score in club history.

Barely in the game for 20 minutes, Woodburn didn't have to do much more than be exactly where he was to get into the scoresheet. Divock Origi and Sadio Mane worked a nice back and forth with a slick backheel flick from Mane. Origi then crossed it Georginio Wijnaldum who pushed it over to the unmarked youngster for a rocket into the top of the net to make it 2-0.

Referencing his age, Klopp was also surprised he was the youngest to score because "the club is nearly 125 years old." He was very nearly right, there have been other 17-year-olds to score for Liverpool, but Woodburn has the now second-youngest beat, Michael Owen, by nearly one hundred days.

Liverpool advanced to the League Cup—now the EFL Cup—semi-finals for the 17th time in history, the most of any club.
