Flyers Escalator Malfunctions and Sends People Spilling Everywhere

Scary scene from Philadelphia, where an escalator sped up while people were still on it.

SCARY: Escalator malfunctions following Flyers game: https://t.co/QsPyHltOcZhttps://t.co/DwOocR5Jkf

Following the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 win at home over the Ottawa Senators Saturday afternoon, an escalator in the Wells Fargo Center apparently malfunctioned, causing it to speed up. It was full of fans leaving the game and it was moving too fast for them to clear the front of the landing area. As a result people went spilling everywhere, some even falling over the hand rail.

The footage was captured by Meghan McGreevy and she told Philly's NBC10 that she saw the moment the escalator sped up, and began filming, though she also said she did not see any serious injuries as a result. Here's another account provided to Broad St. Hockey by a reader named Tom:

I along with my parents and girlfriend were all on board the malfunctioning escalator. We were all but at the top when it started to speed up. It felt as if it just "let go" and it was a very fast, seemingly very long, ride to the bottom. Waiting at the bottom was a pile of fans to trip over and behind us were another group of fans waiting to collapse on top of us. Once at the bottom we were in the middle of a pile of fans with several people hurt including both of my parents. Me and my girlfriend frantically tried to get out of the way and help my parents and another older couple who seemed to get the worse of the fall. Once in first aid there were several people getting checked out. Everything from bruises to possible broken bones. It was a very scary experience and a sad way to end the day after a huge flyers win.

The escalator was immediately shut down and the operator was contacted to investigate what exactly happened. It remained closed during the 76ers game later that same evening. It was back up and running on Sunday, in time for a Rihanna concert.
