Patrick Kane Will Not Face Rape Charges, According to Prosecutors

Putting an end to a bizarre chapter in Kane's life.

The drama of Chicago Blackhawk Patrick Kane's rape investigation has seemingly come to a close, as prosecutors announced today that Kane's accuser will not press charges, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The three-month investigation and surrounding media scrum included a hoax about tampered evidence kits, an account from a police officer moonlighting as Kane's body guard, and several NHL faux pas—the whole thing depicting a bizarre reality. Yet the actual circumstances of the evening may never be revealed by trial, as Kane's alleged victim, a 21-year-old college student, signed an affidavit to decline prosecution.

Last week, the accuser stopped cooperating with the prosecution, saying that the spectacle around the allegations had taken its toll on her and her family. Her mother, in particular, had come under fire for allegedly setting up the rape kit hoax. The atmosphere around the Kane investigation escalated to the point that opposing fans openly chanted "she said no" when Kane was on the ice, and that female reporters were threatened by Kane supporters just for reporting on the incident.

The NHL could still suspend Kane in the event of continued misconduct off the ice. Given the murkiness of the case, it would be nearly impossible to peg this incident down as a strike against him. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks—who have taken a lot of heat for PR miscues amidst the allegations—decided to cancel practice today.
