Look at This Crazy-Ass Play Josh Donaldson Made During a Perfect Game

Josh Donaldson made a ridiculous leaping catch into the stands to record the first out in the eighth inning of a perfect game. Sadly the next batter ended the bid.

Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada had a perfect game through seven innings against the Rays, and thanks to Josh Donaldson he had a perfect game through seven and a third innings. Donaldson tracked David DeJesus's foul pop to the seats down the third base line and went full belly flop as he dove head first into the stands to make the play. It obviously wasn't a perfect game saving play, since it would have just been a foul ball, but damn what a way to get another precious out.

Unfortunately, the next batter, Logan Forsythe, ruined everything. He hit a chopper high enough to third that Donaldson, again with another great play, could not get the throw to first in time. Donaldson charged the ball, but had to wait for it bounce again off the turf before bare-handing it and firing to first. It was close, and it was reviewed, but Forsythe was safe. Perfect game gone, no-hitter gone.

An interesting footnote: the umpire on the call at first was Jim Joyce, who famously boned Armando Galarraga out of a perfect game in 2010 on a bad call at first base. He must have been shitting a brick when he had to make this call.
