ASKA's Stunning New Video is a Requiem to a Friend

"We Are Water" transforms the mystery of loss and heartache into lush piano soundscapes.

We Are Water, a record created by experimental Japanese-American pianist Aska Matsumiya and produced by Arjan Miranda, is a tribute and dedication to their friend Desiree Zondag who died in a California surfing accident.

To be released on The Wild Unknown Records, the label arm of the metaphysical collective of the same name, the instrumental album represents a ritual and poetic act that was recorded to honor Desiree's life. Zondag, an avid surfer, was killed in 2015 when she was struck by her board while surfing near Malibu, California.

Aska, who is also an artist and composer, has been involved in experimental bands including Moonrats and Japanese synth trio ESP. Arjan is formerly of rock band Black Mountain, thrash metal band Children, punk band S.T.R.E.E.T.S., Family Band and more.

To accompany the album, a stunningly beautiful video has been released. Filmed by director AJ Molle, it includes footage shot at Cannon Beach in Oregon’s Ecola State Park and the cinematic quality of the video adds a sense of poignant beauty to the song."

“It's because of the pretence that we put into it, you know, the notion of doing things, that's how we create magic or how we give power to something is the idea we bring to our actions," Aska explained to us via email. "I feel like everything is made by unknowable forces, and it's just more about the things that we've put into doing it, that creates more energy…”

'We Are Water' is available Dec 8 on vinyl and digital through The Wild Unknown Records.
