This business of being a human can be absolutely knackering, can't it? It's basically our fate as a species to be constantly erring between opposites, and that can be difficult to come to terms with as we crawl about this floating rock in our skinsuits. Janelle Monáe, however – as she does on most topics – has some wisdom about this to offer up. And she does so on her chill new track "I Like That," which you can hear at the top of the page.Following last week's frankly amazing "Pynk," and her previous releases of "Django Jane" and serious SOTY competitor "Make Me Feel," "I Like That" is the latest track from Monáe's upcoming album Dirty Computer, out next Friday (27 April). "I Like That" feels like another piece of Dirty Computer's puzzle – it feels like a highly ambitious record which will attempt to touch on lots of different genres, and all kinds of relationships, both with others (as we've seen on "Pynk" and "Make Me Feel," which are fun but insightful ruminations on love and sexuality), and with oneself. The latter is really what "I Like That" showcases.The beat ebbs and flows like water on a slightly breezy day, and Monáe alternately sings and raps introspectively, noting that, like most of us, she's a "Walking contradiction / Guess I'm factual and fiction." Monáe spins it into a positive however, and the "I Like That" of the title embraces all of these competing facets. On the chorus, she's defiant, stating: "I don't really give a fuck if I was just the only one who likes that."It is, of course, awesome, adding even further colour to Dirty Computer's world ahead of its release, and building anticipation for what's probably gonna be the superlative pop record of the year.
