This week I hung out at Vito Fun's “Fun Du Monde” video release party. Vito, if you don’t know, is a guy whose photographs have appeared regularly in VICE; he also makes music, works at a studio, DJs a lot, and likes to have fun (hence his name, in case you didn’t get the idea.)
Vito isn’t a DJ the way all your friends are “DJs” who only play local bars for free drinks. He’s does music festivals, weddings, gay parties, weeklies, and everything in between. Basically, if you can name it, he can DJ it. Festivals are his favorite because the people are on a lot more drugs and let loose. He finds festivals to be a reincarnation of the rave, but more commercial. People often come up to him while he is DJing and offer him a bump or a blowjob. He is really good at earning people's trust right away as well as making enemies quickly. He often breaks the ice by doing something that actually makes them a little uncomfortable, likepulling his pants down.
During his video shoot, Vito rented four leaf blowers and kept one of them because Fat Jew was all about it. Instead of using all purple or all orange people, he wanted a variety of women. If he didn't find them attractive enough to fuck them in a bathroom, they did not belong in his video.
Vito says, “People should try to listen to new music as much as possible. As music gets further and further from the norm it becomes more alien to people, so holding on to new music is like holding on to your youth. Don't be afraid of it.”
You can look out for Vito's collaboration with Nicky Da B, produced by the The DeLoryanz, that adds a little New York dirty dance fusion to Nicky's New Orleans bounce vibe.
