We Made Turn to Crime Fill Out a Dating Questionnaire

Plus check out the Detroit band's new song, "Prince of Slackers."

The man in the middle is Derek Stanton. He's the one answering our silly questions. Love Turn to Crime. The trio make the kind of lo-fi songs that remind me of being 16 and annoyed with my parents. "Prince of Slackers"—premiering below—quite specifically makes me think of saying I was one place and sneaking out to be with my unsuitable monosyllabic Pavement-loving boyfriend-of-the-time instead. And yeah I got caught and grounded for a year. Who knows why "Prince of Slackers" made me think of this moment exactly, but that's the great thing about music right? A guitar tone can dredge up all kinds of weird stuff. Turn to Crime are playing a bunch of shows in NY/BK/Boston over the next couple of days, so you should probably go see them, and read our interview with singer Derek Stanton where he make him fill out our OkCupid-cribbed questionnaire.

Age/Sex/Location:

I'm a man in my 30s living in Detroit.

My self-summary:

I'm a home owner. I live in an old wood colonial house built in 1896. It's alive. It requires allot of attention. I spend all day in my recording studio, Molten Sound, on West Grand Boulevard, the same street as Motown. I go to work at night. I work every night. I have several jobs. I bust my ass so I can afford to press and publicise my records. I run a record label called Mugg & Bopp Records. It exists exclusively to put out the Turn To Crime records and related projects. I have a lovely girlfriend and two cats.

What I’m doing with my life:

I am trying to be happy and stress free, balancing work with pleasure. I'm making music I love. I love making music.

I’m really good at:

The guitar. Making up stupid jokes.

The first things people usually notice about me are:

My no bullshit approach to complete bullshit.

Favorite books:

Right now I am diggin on the George Clinton autobiography Brothas Be, Yo Like George Ain't That Funkin" Kinda Hard On You? I love P-funk. P-funk is my religion.

Favorite movies:

If any one asks me what movie they should check out I always say Possession by Andrzej Żuławski.

Favorite music:

The Ramones. They are the soundtrack to my life.

Favorite TV shows:

Father Ted cracks my shit up.

Favorite Food:

I'm on a raw juice kick, but my life long love is pizza.

Six things I could never do without:

Music, love, friends, family, shelter, nourishment, but that's the bullshit answer… The Ramones, P-Funk, pizza, my recording studio, my hoarder-like amount of music equipment, the goddamned internet and my stupid fucking phone.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit is:

I'm a hipster…. Phew! I feel better now. Back to gentrifying.

(Note: this is a fucking joke internet trolls.)

On a typical Friday night I am:

Working. Always working.

You should message me if:

You're interested in my band.
