AD HOC - Shintaro Sakamoto: "In A Phantom Mood"

Shintaro Sakamoto's latest record is smoooooth.

If there's one thing Shintaro Sakamoto has in spades, it's that he has made the bass guitar lead in a way not heard since John McVie's eight ball rolled away. Apparently Yura Yura Teikoku's former vocalist learned to play the instrument just for his solo debut, but you'd never know from his ability to simultaneously make that baby groove and sing. This is on a serious '70s AM tip, with a little Os Mutantes thrown in for good measure-- as the first release on Other Music's new Fat Possum imprint, you'd almost think the famed platter pushers were launching a reissue label with some lost Japanese gem, but to our surprise In A Phantom Mood is actually a brand new record. Between the "Doo doo doo wah" backup vocals and guitar strumming worthy of the Dan, you'l probably see your parents get handsy if you throw this on at a barbecue. It's that smooth.
