Pioneering Producer and "Fifth Beatle" Sir George Martin Has Died Aged 90

His tireless innovation in the studio marks him out as one of music's most important mixing desk maestros.

Record producer Sir George Martin has died aged 90. The producer, most famous for his work with The Beatles, the Liverpudlian band which he was considered a "fifth member" of, leaves behind him a rich and hugely influential legacy. News of his passing was first broken on Twitter by Ringo Starr.

Born in north London, the producer's work with the Beatles is widely regarded as one of the most significant factors in their success; not just signing them to Parlophone in 1962, but also honing and expanding their sound with both his classic training and flair for technical experimentation. In fact, his ingenuity in the studio stretches far beyond, and before, the legacy of the Beatles. As this single from 1962 showcases, released mere weeks before he met the Fab Four, Martin was arguably a pioneer of the remix.

His calm, authoritative influence on the artists he worked with, alongside his tireless innovation in the studio, marks him out as one of music's most important mixing desk maestros.
