A ‘Minecraft’ Player Is Recreating Studio Ghibli's Beautiful Worlds

Seriously, that glass nightwalker is huge.

Minecraft might be the sandbox where players create Atlantises and computers that can literally control things in real life, but sometimes I'm content with people just making things inside the box—for instance, recreating scenes from Studio Ghibli's animated movies.

As you can see in the video above, PlanetMinecraft user Pero gives you an aerial view of the blue, poisonous forest in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, inhabited by huge mutant insects. Using a mixture of custom textures and custom shader packs, Pero was able to get the colors to match up pretty closely to the films.

The video features an Ohm, one of the trilobite-like insects that try to ravage the human kingdom in the valley. It's huge enough that you can barely it's made out of the game's iconic blocks.

The second video here shows a forest from Princess Mononoke, complete with a towering nightwalker. There are even a bunch of mushrooms or flowers retextured as the head-rattling kodama that covered the trees in the film. You remember those, right?

Pero also reproduced a model Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro:

The Ghibli filmography is rife with opportunities for other spectacular scenes too, and Pero's works seem to be dedicated to huge creature models and forest scenes rather than interior shots. Luckily, other players have sunk hours into reproducing interiors from films like Spirited Away, which you can check out here.
