Woody Allen's New Show Trailer Is Full of 1960s Clichés and Woody Allen Clichés

Can Allen take this bundle of clichés and turn his first TV show into something fresh and engaging?

Despite Woody Allen's allegations of sexual abuse—and the certain fact that he married his former partner Mia Farrow's adopted young daughter—Allen has never had a hard time getting projects funded or famous actors to appear in his films. Allen continues to crank out movies—typically featuring Woody Allen himself or an actor playing a Woody Allen–ish character—at a pace of about one a year. By this point, everyone has decided if they will or will not continue to support him. If you're among the former, you may be in for a treat this month as Woody Allen will, for the first time in his career, move to the small screen with the six-episode TV show Crisis in Six Scenes.

The show, which will debut September 30 on Amazon Video, dropped its first trailer on Wednesday. And, well, it looks very much like a Woody Allen film, complete with Woody Allen staring as a neurotic Jewish writer who is trying to develop a TV series. Set in 1960s America, Crisis in Six Scenes follows an elderly suburban couple—Woody Allen and Elaine May—whose lives get turned "completely upside down" by a young hippie (Miley Cyrus in a blond wig), who introduces them to the famous groups and debates of the 60s counterculture. The trailer alone references bra burning, Black Panthers, protests, and pot smoking.

Can Allen take this bundle of 60s clichés and Woody Allen film clichés and turn them into something fresh and engaging? As late as last year, Allen himself was saying the show wasn't going well, and "I have regretted every second since I said OK." On the other hand, Amazon Studios has a decent track record recently with shows like Transparent and The Man in the High Castle. Watch the trailer and then judge for yourself later this month.
