A festival goer has died after running into the flames at the Burning Man arts and music festival in the Nevada desert.

It is reported that Aaron Joel Mitchell broke through a two-layer security perimeter and evaded officials before running into the towering fire, as festival-goers watched on.

Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said that Mitchell, 41, was rescued by firefighters but later died on Sunday at the UC Davis hospital burn centre in California.

Around 70,000 people are attending the eight-day festival in the Black Rock Desert, about 161 kilometres north of Reno, Nevada. The event culminates with the burning of a towering 12-metre wood effigy. In previous years attendees have tried to run into the flames as a symbol of rebirth.
